Professional Career

In 1985, after graduating from college, Brooks began performing at local bars and clubs in New York City. A lawyer drove from Dallas to Stillwater, Oklahoma just to see Brooks perform. He offered to produce a video. After leaving Boston, Brooks went to Nashville in search of a recording contract. After two days, he had returned home. The lawyer persuaded Garth to give Nashville one last chance. He lived there for seven years before moving back to New York City in 1994.

It took him nearly 20 years before he returned with his second studio release, “Hungry Years.” The album reached number 2 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. He has two more albums coming out before his next big tour begins. In the same year, Brooks went on tour as an opener for country music superstar Kenny Rogers. In 1990, Brooks recorded his second studio album, “No Fences” which went straight into the top position for two months before falling down the chart. It stayed at number 1 for another month before dropping out completely. In addition to these two hits, Brooks has had six Top 10 hit albums since his debut in 1985 including three consecutive Number Ones (“Unanswered Prayers”, “Tear Down These Walls” and “Shake It Up”). His most recent studio release, 2008’s “Roping The Wind”, sold 1.3 million copies during its first week alone, making it Brooks’ biggest-selling record ever. It was the first time an American country singer achieved this milestone. In addition to having three albums in the Top 10 Albums Chart simultaneously, Brooks has been named Country Artist Of The Year by both Rolling Stone Magazine and USA Today for his latest album “Unchanged”. In September 1992 he released “The Chase”, his fourth album.

In 1993, Brooks’ album “In Pieces” was released. It reached number one on both the Billboard 200 chart and the Top Country Albums chart. In 1985 he began his first world tour which sold out Wembley Arena in London, a first for an American country act. In 1996, he released “Fresh Horses”, an album that included two singles, including She’s Every Woman. He then embarked upon another world tour, playing to five million fans and earning almost $100 million. He released his first live album in 1998 called “Double Live”.

Garth Brooks performed his first-ever live show at Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Missouri, the USA on September 18, 2007. He played for almost three hours and received an incredible standing ovation from fans who had waited up to five months just to see him perform. Tickets were $50 each and they went quickly. In early 2008, Brooks performed five sold-out concerts at Hollywood’s House Of Blues in just under 48 hours as part of a benefit concert for victims of the 2007 California fires.

After retiring from touring in early 2009, Brooks returned to performing live in late 2009 after an eight-year hiatus. He performed his first show since 2003 at the Encore Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Wynn gave Brooks exclusive use of one of his company’s jets so he could spend less time traveling and more time at home with his family.

In 2014, Brooks returned from retirement with a new single called “People Loving People”; an album titled Man against Machine; and a world tour. In 2016, Brooks recorded an entire album for Target titled “The Ultimate Collection,” which included two songs from his previous albums (“Gunslinger” and “Baby, Let’s lay down and dance”).

In 2019, the song “All Day Long” from the Fun album became their first number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In the same year, Brooks announced his Stadium tour with 30 North American stadiums, which included playing at the legendary football stadium on the campus for the University of Notre Dame. In 2019, Brooks embarked on the Dive Bar Tour, with stops at seven dive bars across the U.S.

With the coronavirus outbreak spreading worldwide, Brooks and Trish Yearwood put together a live stream event for their fans. It reached nearly five million viewers. It crashed because too many people were accessing it at once. Brooks and Yearwood performed another charity single for coronavirus victims next month at Carnegie Hall. They raised an additional $2 million from ticket sales alone. The CBS broadcast was watched by almost 6 million people. On July 7, they returned to Facebook Live again for an event where they asked their viewers to send them songs by singing into their phone cameras.

Personal Life

While attending UCLA, Brooks met his future wife, singer/songwriter Sandy Mahl. They married in 1964. They got married on 5/24/1986. They had three daughters: Taylor,  August,  and Allie.  Brooks and Mahl divorced on  December 17, 2001. His divorce was one of the most expensive divorces of all time.
