With intrigue percolating behind the scenes, the third major of the 2022 golf season has arrived. However, when 2022 U.S. Open candidates take on The Country Club at Brookline, the USGA is ensuring that as little wind as feasible is taken out of the sails of its top tournament. It will be the 1st time since 1988 that a national champion will be declared in Brookline, Massachusetts, and several of the top candidates are coming into the tournament on a high note, having just played some of their finest golf of the season.

This year’s event features a stacked field that includes the majority of the world’s finest players. Scottie Scheffler, the Masters champion, and Justin Thomas, the PGA Championship winner, are both aiming for a hat trick. Scheffler is attempting to become only the sixth golfer in history to win both the Masters and the US Open in the same season, while Thomas is attempting to become only the seventh player in history to win both the PGA and US Open in the same year.

However, neither is Brookline’s favorite. Rory McIlroy has more enthusiasm than anybody else in the competition after successfully defending his RBC Canadian Open title over the weekend. In his previous four outings, McIlroy has three additional top ten performances, making him one of just four players to finish in the top ten at three (or more) of the last five U.S. Opens.

Phil Mickelson, who skipped the first two rounds of the year due to backlash for contentious statements, might be the star of the show this week. Mickelson resumed play last week and will be looking to complete his professional life grand slam at The Country Club. Unlike in 2021, when he entered the US Open coming off a major triumph, Mickelson has only played three rounds of professional golf in the past four and a half months. There’s no denying that his six career second-place results in the US Open keep going to haunt him, and his 10 top 10 finishes at the event since 1995 demonstrate that he’s right in the middle of things.
