Where did Daya come from?
Grace Martine Tandon, a singer from Pennsylvania who is only 18 years old, performs under the stage name Daya, the Hindi word for affection and kindness. This name is an homage to her family’s Indian heritage. Her early interest in music began a lifelong passion for her. Having started playing the piano at the tender age of3, she could play jazz piano by 11. In addition to the guitar, Daya can play the flute.
Her musical abilities were honed at the Accelerando Music Conservatory, where she became acquainted with the record producer Gino Barletta. Daya was the first person on Barletta’s roster for the summer music camp that he established. Barletta invited the young performer to Los Angeles in 2015 to record her original songs.
Daya is primarily responsible for the composition of the material she has recorded. She came up with her breakthrough song, “Hide Away,” while she was in Los Angeles participating in a writing session. The singer returned to high school the next day, but her connections in the music industry sensed that she had a potential hit on her hands, and an independent label released the song.
Although several bloggers brought attention to the song, her big break came when Billboard featured her single on its website. After the release of this debut, Daya went on to write five more songs and put out her first EP.
Daya’s musical milestones
Daya has not only had a string of hits but also performed in front of some notable audiences. She was asked to perform at the annual Easter Egg Roll held at the White House in 2016, hosted by President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.
During the same year, she became a hip-hop group Jack & Jack member and served as the official tour opener for them. Daya also appeared in an episode of the Nickelodeon show School of Rock, where she sang “I Put a Spell on You.”
Recent events have resulted in her contribution to “Don’t Let Me Down” being considered for a Grammy award nomination.
