It’s the big showdown we’ve all been longing for. The Avalanche and the Lightning, the league’s most dynamic team and back-to-back winners, will meet in the 2022 Stanley Cup Final.

The Avalanche were the preseason top choices to win the Stanley Cup this season. Now they’re only four victories away from achieving that goal.

The Colorado Avalanche came out fire in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final, and quickly built a lead against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The change this time was that the Avalanche didn’t allow Lightning off the hook when winning 7-0.

Colorado scored early and frequently, with Valeri Nichushkin scoring less than three minutes into the game on a power play. Five minutes later, Josh Manson extended the advantage, and Andre Burakovsky concluded the Avs’ three-goal first period. Unlike in Game 1, Tampa Bay had no explanation in the second period, as the Avs scored twice more.

Colorado scored two more goals in the third quarter to take a 2-0 series lead.

It’s difficult to obtain any advantages for the Lightning after Game 2. Everyone from Andrei Vasilevskiy onward struggled in the face of the Avalanche’s persistent pressure. Tampa Bay rallied from a 2-0 series disadvantage in the last round, but they aren’t facing the New York Rangers this time. It’s too soon to write out the Bolts, but they looked absolutely outmatched in Denver.

The Lightning can only expect that returning to Tampa will help reverse the tide in this series, as the Avalanche are on the verge of winning Game 3. On Monday, June 20, the game will begin at 8:00 p.m. ET.
