The character of Stan is a representation and embodiment of his fans. The song tells the story from three different perspectives: Eminem’s beginning, where he realizes life isn’t what it seems; Stan’s perspective during his descent into madness; and Eminem’s final verse which describes him frantically trying to get back at Slim Shady through any means possible.
The Song Told From Three Different Perspectives
Stan is a fan of Eminem for years, but he feels that the artist has grown too close to drugs. In this letter he sends tracks down what exactly bothered him about some songs in particular- specifically “Drug Ballad” which asks us not to give into drug use.
Another track on the album is “Amityville” and it’s about Eminem’s house burning down. Stan, a fan of Slim Shady, mentions that if he ever meets him in person he would want to shake his hand; but also warns him never to come near because of fears that the rapper might steal his girlfriend. The song then segues into Stan’s point of view as a murder plays out and then ends with Stan taking away an unborn baby from its parents’ home by force. Armed with a gun, he takes her by force from their house before she dies at the hands of her boyfriend at their own home.
“Stan” ends with Eminem receiving another letter from an obsessed fan. It is the first letter he had received, which was written in the third person. The song concludes with Eminem’s frantic attempts to save his life by trying to contact Stan through phone calls and emails. However, both of them died at their home on a rainy spring night when they were alone together.”.
Theories Interpreting Stan
The most popular theory is that the title character was based on the late rapper Biggie Smalls. Another interpretation of “stan” as an acronym for “stalker fan,” while there are those who believe it stands for “Student Taking a New Perspective.” The song may have been written in response to Biggie’s “ Long Kiss Goodnight which features lyrics from Stan.
Ranking and Awards
Stan is one of Eminem’s most successful songs, with it ranking 18 on the list of 100 Greatest Hip-Hop Songs Of All Time. It has sold over five million copies in America alone, becoming one of his best-selling singles to date. At the 2001 Grammy Awards ceremony, Stan achieved three awards: Best Rap Solo Performance (the song), Song Of The Year, and Best Music Video.
Stan Feature on “BoJack Horseman”
The episode featured a special guest star from the popular Netflix show “BoJack Horseman”. Stan participated in several shenanigans before the tragic ending of his adventures at the end of it. Bojack becomes distraught after watching this episode, which triggers a chain reaction in him that culminates in an average day at work when he hears someone shout “Horsin’ Around”.
It reminds him that he has been neglecting his life’s purpose since becoming famous for playing a successful sitcom actor on TV. Meanwhile, this other character from another world who is similar to himself appears to have lost everything, while not taking advantage of opportunities when they were available. In the final moments, both characters lament together over how things could have turned out had everything played out as they had expected.
