Origin of the Grammy Awards

The Grammys first hit our stage in 1959. Since then, it is considered the super bowl of the music industry. It is equivalent to Academy Awards and has since become a household name. Previously, the Grammys has highlighted many vital music-related issues and was very integral in the 2018’s edition in which the #GrammysSoMale hash-tag went viral.

Today the Grammy Awards is music’s biggest award. For decades, this award has given use countless precious moments. Some of its most memorable moments include Jennifer Lopez in the Versace dress in 2000 to Lady Gaga arriving in the giant egg for the 2011 Awards.

The Annual GRAMMY Awards has its nominees announced in 84 categories. The 62nd Grammy Awards, for instance, honors the best in recordings that are released between Oct. 1, 2018, and Aug. 31, 2019.

Flashback to the 2019’s Edition: 61st Annual Grammy Awards

This year, the 61st Annual Grammy Awards hosted by Alicia Keys, saw Kacey Musgrave and Childish Gambino taking home 4 awards each.

Kendrick Lamar was on the hall of fame with eight nominations while Cardi B made broke the jinx and became the first solo woman to bag the award for the Best Rap Album.

Michelle Obama also made a surprise appearance and joined Jennifer Lopez, Lady Gaga, and Jada Pinkett Smith to air their feeling of how inspirational and empowering music is. Thankfully, it was in this 2019’s edition that Diana Ross also celebrated her 75thbirthday taking the stage by storm with an electric performance.

NOTE: The Staples Centre in Los Angeles, where the 2020 Grammy Awards will be held has hosted the Grammys since the year 2000 with only two exceptions of the 2003 and 2018 Grammy Awards.

The Change in the Air

Let’s hit the platform with the real deal. As music lovers, this is a very big event for you. Nonetheless, you must know what’s going down and here are the most important things you first need to know.

The Announcement

The announcement of the 62nd Annual GRAMMY Awards includes an important entry process that is done online and whose dates and also the member voting windows are clearly outlined. This is a very invaluable process in the determination of who joins the list when the nominees for the 62nd Annual GRAMMY Awards are announced.

The announcement of the nominees outlines the main event’s lineup that is slated for the 2020 GRAMMY Week. The lineup includes:

  • Producers & Engineers Wing Celebration (Jan. 22)
  • Music Educator Award Announcement (Jan 23),
  • Entertainment Law Initiative and MusiCares Person of the Year (Jan. 24)
  • GRAMMY Nominees Reception (Jan 25)
  • Clive Davis’ and The Recording Academy’s Pre-GRAMMY Gala (Jan 25)
  • GRAMMY Awards Premiere Ceremony and GRAMMY Celebration – 62nd GRAMMY Awards (Jan. 26).

Nominated Music

Only the music that was released between the 1st of October 2018 and 31st of August 2019 can be nominated for the 62nd Annual GRAMMY Awards.

This means that the eligibility window will be cut short by a single month. The reason for this is nothing big. The Grammy Awards 2020 ceremony was moved forward by about two weeks to give it a breather with the 92nd Academy Awards that goes down on the 9th of February 2020 too.

Number of Nominations

Another critical change about the Grammys is that the number of nominees for some categories including, the Record of the Year, Best New Artist, Album of the Year, and the Song of the Year will be increased from the original 4 to 8 – which is double the number.

This is to make the 62nd GRAMMY Awards a much inclusive event that diminishes discrimination.

NOTE: This is a great way to address the gender imbalance and create a much-diversified event in the mainstream music industry.

Who Hosts the Grammy Awards 2020?

The 2020 62nd GRAMMY Awards will be hosted by Alicia Keys. The 15 time Grammy Award winner will be making a return to the stage after hosting the 61st Annual Grammy Awards in 2019.

She was the first woman in the last 14 years to host this breathtaking event. Previously the other woman to host the event was Queen Latifah in 2005.

Who is the Executive Producer For 62nd GRAMMYs?

The Recording Academy also announced that Ken Ehrlich – the longtime producer and executive producer of the Annual GRAMMY Awards, will also be the main executive producer of the Grammy Awards 2020 that will be held on the 26th of January 2020 in Los Angeles.

This will be Ehrlich’s 40th anniversary in making of the Music’s Biggest Night show award of the year.

Ehrlich produced his first Grammy Awards in 1980 and has since become known for his impeccable touch for the most incredible, iconic, and unexpected pairings including:

  • Prince and Beyoncé
  • Eminem and Elton John
  • Dave Grohl, Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, and Joe Walsh

NOTE: There will be a change in the 63rd Grammys as the academy announced that Ben Winston will be the new executive producer for the next edition.

How Are the Nominees and Winners Selected?

The selection of the Annual Grammy Awards is a rather simple process. Usually, the members of the Recording Academy will submit entries together with members of other registered record companies.

They will submit entries for all the 84 categories of the main Grammy Awards Events. These entries are then screened for eligibility and also for the correct category placement by a group of 350 experts.

The experts are usually brought from various fields of the music industry. After this, the voting commences.

There are always the two rounds of ballots namely the first-round and final round before the nominees are sent to the voting members.

It is the voting members that will determine the top five nominees for each category and eventually also determine the winners.

Ballots are usually monitored by the independent accounting firm – Deloitte.  Deloitte keeps the voting results secret – they have a Non-Disclosure Agreement until the day that the event goes down live on television as the Grammy Awards ceremony.

The nomination of the artists to the selection and final voting remains a secret to preserve the integrity of the whole event. It is one of those things that makes the Grammy’s an epic musical event of all time.

2020 Grammy Awards Predictions

Going by the list of the nominees, it won’t be a surprise to see the newcomers win big. Well, that doesn’t mean that we are writing off the old guards, no. The ball just began to roll.

Even so, the likes of Billie Eilish, Lizzo and Lil Nas X have had some fine run and big breaks in 2019. Nonetheless, who hits the home run is the guy to watch. These guys might be the front runners, but this is a big sea to swim in and we have seen some great surprises before.

Thankfully the nominee’s list is longer and the chances are slimmer. Our take though; may the best team win. With major contenders such as Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande in the line, it is a hard call to make.

Who Makes the Invite List?

The invitees to the Annual Grammy Awards in 2020 include but are not limited to the following groups:

  • Grammy nominees and their guests
  • Guests of the Recording Academy
  • Voting members
