It’s unusual for a performer with eight Grammy nominations to be questioned about their plans to retire from music on the Grammys red carpet. Doja Cat, on the other hand, isn’t your usual musician, and she was asked this question ahead of the ceremony at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on Sunday (April 3).
The topic of her retirement from music came up during her red carpet interview with Entertainment Tonight.
“You had Twitter ablaze, you had social media ablaze, you had our newsroom ablaze with the news that Doja Cat is quitting music,” ET noted. “That can’t happen.”
Doja’s face froze for a moment as she absorbed the inquiry. She only responded with a five-second “Uhhhhh” before deftly switching the topic.
“We’re here at the Grammys,” she said. “It’s a great time and I’m so happy to be here and thank you guys so much.”
She did, although, reassure fans that she would be performing as The Weeknd’s tour guest once more. “It’s gonna happen,” she said. “North America, I’m coming.”
The Planet Her artist was also questioned about her ideal Grammy stage collaboration, which she quickly revealed to be Nicki Minaj, her “Say So” guest. “Well everybody knows it’s Nicki, all the time it’s Nicki,” she said. “There’s new artists, too, that I probably want to work with later. Doechii is another female rapper who’s incredible.”
The 26-year-old rapper made news on March 24 when she announced her retirement from music on Twitter in response to backlash following the postponement of her act at Paraguay’s Asunciónico festival due to flooding. “I don’t give a f–k anymore I f–kin quit I can’t wait to f–king disappear and I don’t need you to believe in me anymore,” she wrote at the time. “Everything is dead to me, music is dead, and i’m a f–king fool for ever thinking I was made for this this is a f–king nightmare unfollow me.”
Doja later backed up her claim on March 31, stating that she would be leaving after fulfilling her promises to programs like The Weeknd’s After Hours tour. “For those who are seeing me at the after hours tour, i’m not bailing,” she tweeted. “But me not bailing doesn’t mean my a– isn’t gonna disappear right after.”
Despite this, she attended music’s greatest evening and even won the prize for best pop duo/group act with SZA, with whom she collaborated on “Kiss Me More.”As she was in the bathroom, she nearly skipped the win— “I have never taken such a fast piss in my whole life,” she announced — and got pretty emotional during her acceptance speech. “I like to downplay s–t,” she said tearfully. “But this? It’s a big deal.”
Doja Cat’s appearance finally comes less than two weeks after she announced her retirement from music on Twitter after fans chastised her for not feeling guilty for a canceled show in Paraguay. After the first day of the Asunciónico Festival in Paraguay was suspended due to water, she was unable to perform in the nation.
